The winner, Paul Thompson, writes:
"This shot shows me and my SQN 5S, series II,
cameraman Luke Hallam and presenter Ben Fogle, shooting a piece to
camera for BBC2's 'Extreme Dreams' in Venezuela. The aim of the
expedition was to summit Mount Roraima, the world's highest Tepui
(tabletop mountain) at 2,800m, using a lesser travelled route
originally used by early Victorian explorers. This involved an
eight day trek across the steaming hot 'Gran Sabana', located in
the Canaima National Park area of south eastern Venezuela. The trip
was undertaken during the rainy season and involved many river
crossings as well as traversing a few bogs and the odd waterfall.
The other main difficulties endured were intense heat and merciless
insects.
Roraima and the other tabletop mountains of the region are believed
to be some of the oldest rock formations on the planet, at around
two billion years old and accounts of early expeditions are said to
have inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'"
